Zyn in Canada: Is It Legal? Where to Buy in 2026

If you’ve used Zyn in the United States or Europe and you’ve just landed in Canada, you’ve probably noticed the pouches are hard to track down. There’s a reason. Zyn isn’t authorized for sale here, and the rules around nicotine pouches in general tightened sharply over the past two years. This guide covers what’s legal in 2026, what isn’t, and what your realistic options are.

Is Zyn legal in Canada?

Short version: not for retail sale. Zyn is made by Philip Morris International, and the company hasn’t obtained the authorization Health Canada requires before any nicotine pouch can be sold in this country. So no licensed Canadian pharmacy or store can legally stock it.

This got very public in the summer of 2026. On June 10 that year, Health Canada posted a recall for Zyn pouches and gave the reason as a product “sold without market authorization (DIN) in Canada.” The recall covered 6 mg pouches across several flavours, Cool Mint and Wintergreen and Spearmint and Menthol among them. If you see Zyn on a shelf somewhere in Canada, that stock came in through a channel nobody is regulating.

Having a tin you brought back from a trip is a separate question from a store selling it. Personal possession isn’t what regulators are chasing. The sales side is. How the rules got stricter

Nicotine pouches slipped into the Canadian market through a gap. They were treated as nicotine replacement therapy, the same bucket as the gum and lozenges people use to quit smoking. For a while that meant one brand sat on convenience store counters, right next to the gum and the candy.

That set off a backlash from health groups and parents. Health Canada responded in August 2024 with a Ministerial Order that reshaped how these products can be sold. From that point, pouches could only be sold by a pharmacist, or by someone working under a pharmacist’s supervision, and had to be kept behind the counter. Flavours were cut back to mint or menthol. Packages had to carry a nicotine addiction warning on the front. Any marketing that might appeal to young people was banned.

The category didn’t vanish. It got moved behind the pharmacy counter and stripped of the flavours and the advertising that had made it spread so fast.

The one pouch you can actually buy: Zonnic

Zonnic is the exception. Health Canada authorized it in 2023 as a smoking cessation aid for adults, and it’s still the only nicotine pouch with proper authorization in 2026. It’s made by Imperial Tobacco Canada.

Here’s what to expect from it:

• You’ll find it behind the counter at many pharmacies, not out on the floor.
• A staff member hands it to you, and might ask what you’re using it for.
• Strength tops out at roughly 4 mg per pouch.
• Flavours are mint and menthol, nothing else.
• The packaging carries a plain warning that nicotine is addictive.

It isn’t Zyn. People who’ve used regular Zyn often say the flavour range is narrower and the feel is different. But it’s the legal route, and it comes with the same safety oversight as other quit-smoking products.

Where to buy Zyn in Canada in 2026

Your only fully legal option is a pharmacy. Phone ahead when you can, because not every location stocks pouches, and since they live behind the counter you won’t find them by browsing the aisles. Pharmacy counters at Shoppers Drug Mart, London Drugs, and the ones tucked inside grocery stores are the usual places to ask. A few pharmacies sell online with age checks at delivery, though the selection is thin and it’s still mint or menthol only. Convenience stores and gas stations used to carry pouches and no longer can, so if you see them there, that store is offside. Vape shops are in the same position. Ordering Zyn from a US or European site means importing a product with no Canadian authorization, and that can be held or seized at the border, which makes it an unreliable way to keep yourself supplied.

Flavours, strengths, and age

Legal pouches in Canada are mint or menthol, and that’s the whole list. The long flavour menus you see abroad aren’t permitted through authorized sellers. Strength is capped low, around 4 mg, well under the 6 mg and stronger pouches that are common in other countries.

On age, these are sold as adult products for quitting smoking, and the pharmacy counter is the gate. Provincial rules for tobacco and vaping products set the minimum age somewhere between 18 and 21, with most provinces landing on 19. Alberta, Manitoba, and Quebec sit at 18. If that framework settles, a company like Philip Morris could apply to bring Zyn in through the front door. It would still face the mint or menthol limit, the behind-the-counter rule, and the marketing restrictions. None of that is guaranteed, and timelines in this corner of policy tend to slip.
